Thanks to the increasing environmental awareness of a growing number of homeowners, the utilization of clean alternative energy sources have gained more popularity in recent years.

One of the renewable energy sources gaining momentum around the world now is solar energy. Today, many consumers are beginning to look at solar energy as a viable alternative energy solution to save money – and more importantly, our planet.

Solar Panels – What are They Made Of?

Solar panels are made of PV or photovoltaic cells which transforms the precious energy coming from the sun into electricity. These PV cells are sandwiched between layers of semiconductors such as silicone that are designed with a positive and negative layer, which, when put together, generate an electric field.

How Do Solar Panels Generate Electricity?

As the light from the sun interacts with the silicone, electrons are set into motion, which in turn initiates the flow of electric current in the system. This is known as the ‘photoelectric effect,’ and this mainly describes how the solar panel technology functions. Solar panels generate DC (Direct Current) form of electricity. The solar inverter then converts DC into AC (Alternating Current) which is utilized by the majority of household appliances.

Here’s an informative video showing how solar panels convert solar energy into electrical energy.

Advantages of Solar Energy

There are some other renewable sources of energy available, but why choose solar energy? Here are the benefits of utilizing solar power:

  1. The solar panels provide guaranteed energy when the sun is shining, making them a doable and consistent energy generator throughout the day.
  2. Compared to other renewable energy sources, solar panels do not need as much space and can be installed in a variety of places.
  3. Aside from occasional cleaning to keep dirt and other debris away, solar panels require little to no maintenance once they are already installed.
  4. Solar panels are mostly comprised of silicone sheets and don’t release toxic fumes, so they are very safe.
  5. They do not create noise pollution while producing electricity.
